01

Start with viewing distance

Pixel pitch describes the distance between LED pixels. A tighter pitch supports closer viewing and finer detail, while a wider pitch can be appropriate for roadside messages seen from farther away. Selecting the tightest pitch without considering normal viewing distance can add cost without a visible benefit.

Screen dimensions, aspect ratio and content type should be decided together. A display intended for short text alerts has different needs from a video wall or detailed menu board.

02

Outdoor performance is more than brightness

Ottawa installations must account for direct sun, temperature swings, moisture, ventilation and service access. The enclosure, control hardware and structure should be planned as one system. Confirm how failed modules and power supplies can be accessed without dismantling surrounding cladding.

  • Daylight brightness and automatic dimming
  • Outdoor temperature and ingress ratings
  • Front or rear module service access
  • Stable power and surge protection
  • Wired or secure wireless connectivity
03

Content determines whether the sign works

Use short messages, large type and high contrast. A roadside viewer cannot absorb a poster scaled onto a screen. Establish who can publish, how content is approved and what happens when connectivity is interrupted. A simple content policy is as important as the hardware specification.
