Diagnose before ordering parts
A dark section can result from failed LED modules, a power supply, wiring, water entry or a circuit issue. Uneven illumination may come from aging fluorescent components, incorrect LED spacing, dirty faces or internal shadows. An inspection should identify the failure and the condition of the surrounding structure.
When repair makes sense
Repair is often reasonable when the cabinet or letters are structurally sound, faces remain presentable and replacement components are accessible. An LED retrofit can reduce energy use and simplify maintenance in an older fluorescent cabinet.
- Structure and mounting remain secure
- Faces are not badly faded or cracked
- Water damage is limited and repairable
- The brand and message are still current
- Service access is safe and practical
When replacement creates more value
Replace the sign when corrosion, repeated water entry, obsolete construction, major face damage or a brand change makes continued repair inefficient. A new design can also improve readability, service access and nighttime consistency rather than preserving an underperforming format.
Before deciding, request separate pricing for immediate repair, a complete LED retrofit and full replacement. Compare expected service life, warranty, energy use and the cost of future access. A low-cost repair is not economical if the same aging components are likely to require another lift visit within a short period.
